Holly makes me rake the gravel in our driveway if it gets a few bumps in it. She’s a little overly house-proud though. This autumn, she spent four-hundred-dollars on pumpkins for the front porch just so people driving past can say, “Fuck that’s a lot of pumpkins.”

“How much did you actually spend on pumpkins, Holly?”

“Not much.”

“What are they, like a dollar each?”

“Something like that.”

“So about four-hundred dollars then?”

“There’s not that many.”

“Where did you even find this many pumpkins?”

“I went to a farm.”

“What?”

“A pumpkin farm.”

“Were they selling them from a cart out the front?”

“No, I picked them.”

“Did the farmer see you?”

“Yes, you pay him to pick them. He gives you a cart and a pair of stalk cutters and you walk around and pick the ones you like. It’s not a thing in Australia?”

“No. People generally just buy one pumpkin at a time. From a supermarket. If they’re making a soup or something.”

“You don’t decorate your porch in fall?”

“No.”

“Well that’s just sad.”

“Not particularly. You don’t think it’s weird stacking four-hundred pumpkins on a porch?”

“It’s festive.”

“It’s a bit over the top.”

“No it isn’t. I actually need a few more to fill in the gaps. And a couple of hay bales.”

“How did you even get this many pumpkins home?”

“I borrowed JM’s truck.”
